WHAT LIPOSUCTION WON’T DO
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite – the dimpled skin that typically appears on the thighs, hips, and buttocks – or loose saggy skin.
What you should know
- Take medication as directed. Do not take aspirin for one week following surgery.
- Leave bandages and surgical garments in place until your first post-operative visit
- Do not remove or wet surgical garments and/or bandages
- Avoid lifting, bending only as necessary.
- Drink plenty of fluids; your diet should be as tolerated.
- For facial liposuction, keep head elevated for the first week following surgery, for extremity liposuction, keep the area elevated for the first week, for abdominal liposuction, sleep on your back for the first week
- You may experience some post-operative discomfort. Take the prescribed medication as directed. The discomfort usually subsides within a few days.
- You will develop swelling and bruising post-operatively; this is temporary. Most of the bruising resolves within 7-10 days, although it can persist for 4-6 weeks or longer. The swelling takes about 3-4 weeks to resolve. Minor and intermittent swelling may persist for several months after surgery. Your results will improve with time.
- Your surgical incisions will be red and itchy after surgery. This is temporary and will improve with time. You will experience numbness in the areas of suction. Although this can be permanent, sensation usually returns within 8-12 weeks or longer after surgery. It can sometimes take up to one full year for return of sensation.
Liposuction is a sculpting procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Therefore, you will not lose weight as a result of surgery. As a matter of fact, you may have a temporary weight gain after surgery from post-operative fluid retention. This is temporary and will resolve on its own.
- You may resume full exercise after 4 weeks.
- For facial liposuction patients: wear the surgical garment at night for 3 weeks; you may leave it off during the day
- For body liposuction patients: Wear the surgical garment 24 hours a day for the 2nd post-operative week; you may remove the garment to bathe. For the 3rd and 4th weeks, wear the garment during the day and leave it off at night.
- Avoid direct sun to liposuction areas until all bruising has subsided. After that, using a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 is advised to prevent burning.
