Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals.

Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:

WHAT A TUMMY TUCK WON’T DO

A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies would be advised to postpone a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised.

POST OPERATIVE CARE

  • Drains will remain in place until output is less that 30cc in a 24 hours period for each drain
  • Pain pump should last 2-3 days following surgery, you will also have prescription pain medication to take by mouth
  • Leave all dressings intact and girdle/garment in place until post-operative appointment
  • No shower until 24 hours following removal of drains.
  • No bath or swimming for 4 weeks following procedure
  • No exertional activity until after drains are removed, no abdominal exercise for 4 weeks
  • May resume driving once you have discontinued using the prescription pain medications
  • Post-operative appointment will be scheduled for 1 week following surgery, all sutures are internal and do not need to be removed
  • Sleep with head elevated for 2 weeks.
  • Drink plenty of water and have stool softeners such as Colace available as pain medications can cause constipation

PANNICULECTOMY VS. TUMMY TUCK

The biggest difference is the goal of the surgical procedure. A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess fat, skin, and tissue, while a panniculectomy is performed to remove a pannus. A panniculectomy solely addresses the issue of loose, sagging skin and excess fat of the pannus.

Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the pannus — excess skin and tissue from the lower abdomen. This excess skin is sometimes referred to as an “apron.” Unlike a tummy tuck, the panniculectomy does not tighten the abdominal muscles for a more cosmetic appearance, it is strictly for skin removal. This is very common after a major weight loss.
